Before leaving for home there was a chance to visit the flower and spice market in Nice. Never having visited before I jumped at the chance. Nice was one of the traditional ports on the spice route where many mysteries and treasures from the travels of the 16th century explorers found their way on to European soil. The colour from the flowers and plants set against the sandy buildings and bright sunlight was a triumph. We wandered through the stalls with the huge bunches of showy peonies, scented roses and exotic bird of paradise blooms. Then there were the soap makers stalls, crystallised fruits and petals and finally the spice sellers. You could almost step back in time and see the boats being unloaded of their exotic, never seen before treasures. A walk in the old town completed the visit before heading back past olive oil shops and traditional chocolateries with their welcome air conditioning.
