Aromatic First Aid

When you’re off on holiday sometimes space is limited and if you’re flying there’s the liquid limit to think about as well but by including just a few essential oils you can cover a lot of eventualities!

My kit includes:

  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi)
  • Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus)
  • Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
  • Roman Chamomile (chamaemelum nobile)
  • Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

For carriers I use:

  • Aloe vera gel
  • Natural yogurt
  • Alcohol (vodka)
  • Water
  • White lotion

Below I’ve listed a few common summer problems:

Cuts & Grazes

Use equal parts of tea tree and lavender mixed in white lotion. Apply to affected area after bathing thoroughly with cold water

Bruising

Use equal parts of:

  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
  • Roman Chamomile (chamaemelum nobile)

Mix together in white lotion or Witchazel and apply to the affected area

Insect bites / Stings

Use equal parts of:

  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • Roman Chamomile (chamaemelum nobile)

Mix together in white lotion and apply to the affected area. Tea Tree can be added if the head has been taken off with scratching to help prevent infection

Sunburn

Use equal parts of:

  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
  • Roman Chamomile (chamaemelum nobile)

Mix the oils together with plain natural yogurt and dab on the affected area. A tiny amount of Peppermint (Mentha piperita) can be added for extra cooling effect but care must be taken as it can irritate the skin. Aloe vera is also a good base for this recipe

Swollen ankles

Make a spritzer by mixing equal quantities of:

  • Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi)
  • Lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus)
  • Peppermint (Mentha piperita

Dissolve the essential oils in a little alcohol and then add water. Use at night as the grapefruit can cause photo sensitization!
