Spring Clean

I love it when the weather starts to improve, days lengthen and spring is really evident. It’s a time of growth and renewal and change. I love to open the windows, air the house and give it a good spring clean. This very often ends up with all the cupboards being emptied and sorted. I think it is important to clear clutter both in our living space and our minds. It allows us space to begin new projects and make changes. I recently started reading the Zen habits blog by Leo Baubata http://zenhabits.net/start/. He is very inspirational, giving practical achievable advice that he practices himself. Another blog I have just found is Peace and Projects http://www.peaceandprojects.com/blog/. Have a read and see what you think. If you have any favourites why not share them?

This month is all about Spring so I’m going to start with some detox blends for the body and mind to hopefully clear some space and allow new ideas to flow.

Spring cleaning your system with diet

  1. Ensure that you eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables
  2. Enjoy fruit juices with detoxifying properties such as celery, carrot, apple and beetroot
  3. Incorporate wheatgrass into juices. This can be grown really easily on a sunny windowsill in a small seed tray
  4. Reduce the amount of red meat you consume
  5. Eat fish and poultry steamed or cooked without additional oils
  6. Add linseed to your breakfast to help cleanse the colon.
  7. Eat brown rice to help cleanse the colon of toxins
  8. Reduce or eliminate caffeine and alcohol from you diet
  9. Drink at least 2 litres of water per day
  10. Nettle tea has excellent detoxifying properties. It can be sweetened with a little honey

Treatments to detoxify the system

1. Skin brushing is an excellent way of removing dead skin cells from the surface of the skin and causing the skin to eliminate toxins.

Use a pure bristle brush to brush upwards towards the heart in gentle strokes.

This should be done each morning before you shower or bath

2. Salt Baths – add a handful of Epsom salts or sea salt to a warm bath a couple of times a week to encourage the body to release toxins through the skin

Spring cleaning essential oils

Essential Oils to spring clean the system should have properties to cause the elimination of toxins. They should also stimulate the lymph system which carries toxins in the body, encouraging them to dispose of them into the urinary system for elimination. The kidneys and liver are important organs in the elimination process. They receive toxins and process them allowing for safe disposal out of the system. The respiratory system also acts as an organ of elimination for carbon dioxide.

Essential oils for spring cleaning the system

Juniper Berry (Juniperus communis)

This is a powerful oil for purifying the system. It acts on the lymph system helping the body eliminate toxins. It can be used in very small amounts on the skin to assist with the elimination of toxins in cases of acne. It also has properties which help clean the mind. An excellent oil for an all over spring clean.

Caution: Do not use during pregnancy or if you have any kidney problems. Use only in small amounts for short periods of time

Lemon (Citrus limon)

Lemon has many properties, one of them being that it refreshes the blood whilst stimulating the lymphatic system to remove and eliminates toxins. It also stimulates and clears the mind.

Caution: Citrus oils are phototoxic so skin should not be exposed to sun or sunbeds after using them.

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)

Rosemary has many excellent properties, one being the ability to detoxify the lymph system. It is also a liver tonic and can be used in blends to help dispel hangovers. It is invigorating to the system reviving and refreshing the whole system including the mind.

Caution: Do not use during pregnancy or if you suffer from epilepsy.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)

Sweet Fennel is a very powerful oil. It is the most detoxifying of all essential oils helping release toxins from the system through its diuretic action. It also acts as a deep cleanser and purifier to the system. Fennel is often used to help alleviate the symptoms caused by digestive problems

Caution: Do not use during pregnancy or if you suffer from epilepsy.

Carrot seed (Daucus carota)

Carrot seed essential oil is one of the best liver tonics. It helps to regenerate liver cells. It has a purifying action on the blood making it useful in the elimination of toxins. It has a similar effect on the mind being both regenerative and rejuvenating.

Grapefruit (Citrus paradisi)

Grapefruit is excellent in the treatment of water retention and cellulite. It encourages the system to release stored water into the lymphatic system for disposal. It helps calm and relax over heated and stressed livers. It lifts the spirits, cleanses and stimulates the whole system.
