Nurturing and Grounding essential oils

There must be times in all our busy lives when we seem to have trouble keeping our feet on the ground! With the hectic lifestyle we lead it is easy to feel unconnected to the earth and as if we are floating uncontrollably with our heads spinning.

There must be times in all our busy lives when we seem to have trouble keeping our feet on the ground! With the hectic lifestyle we lead it is easy to feel unconnected to the earth and as if we are floating uncontrollably with our heads spinning. At these times we need to be able to ‘ground’ ourselves and put our feet firmly back on the earth. There are lots of different ways of achieving this – mine is to go out in the garden and work with the soil. This isn’t always possible so a blend of essential oils used whilst visualising working with the earth or walking in the countryside is my other favourite option.

Below I have put together some of my favourite nurturing and grounding oils along with ideas of how to use them

Vetiver (Vetiveria zizanoides)

This thick brown coloured oil is extracted from the roots of this perennial grass. It is very ‘earthy’ smell gives it grounding properties. It is relaxing, stabilizing and restorative. Due to its heavy aroma it is best mixed with lighter smelling oils such as the citrus family

Benzoin (Styrax benzoin)

This essential oil is steam distilled from resin drawn from the tree in the same way as frankincense. It has a sweet vanilla aroma which some people may find ‘sickly’. It is an excellent essential oil for comforting and protecting. It was traditionally used in incense to ward off evil spirits.

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin)

This oil is distilled from the dried fermented leaves of the evergreen shrub. It has a distinct smell which you either love or hate! It’s a very grounding oil which helps put your feet back on the floor when your head is lost in the clouds. It helps to concentrate the body and mind in the present.

Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha)

This oil is extracted in the same way as benzoin. It is a soothing, calming oil, excellent for the mind and healing the base chakra. It promotes inner stillness and peace when the world around is full of noise and chatter.
